Badges & Modules
What is a badge?
- A USTA Coaching badge is a series of short, practical online learning modules designed around specific coaching roles and impactful tennis topics (e.g., Intro to Coaching, Athlete-Centered Coaching, High School Coach, Events & Social Play).
- Our microlearning modules are designed for coaches to learn at their own pace. Each module takes approximately 20 minutes to complete and a badge consists of no more than seven modules, allowing for immediate skill application. Some badges offer hands-on options, including in-person workshops for practical application and mentorship.
- Badges like "Intro to Coaching" can lead to the Development Coach badge, while others are core or elective components of the Professional Coach Certification pathway, supporting a clear path to certification.
- All badges are earned within the coaching space, focusing on enhancing coach effectiveness, promoting athlete-centered outcomes, and recognizing professional growth.
- For more information and to explore available badges, please visit the Education page at USTACoaching.com.
What is a module?
- USTACoaching.com offers a series of short, online coaching modules (each approximately 20 minutes or less) designed to cover specific coaching topics.
- These modules are structured as part of a larger learning pathway, where completion of a series leads to earning a badge that signifies expertise in a broader coaching theme.
- The interactive nature of the modules uses a mix of videos, prompts, reflections, and assessments to help you immediately apply the knowledge gained directly onto the court.
- Coaches can progress step-by-step through these stackable and flexible modules, building confidence and earning recognition for their learning.
- Further exploration of modules and badges is available on the Education page of USTACoaching.com.
What do I get when I complete a badge?
- You’ll receive a digital badge that can be displayed on your USTA coach profile. It represents verified skills in specific coaching areas.
Are badges required to get certified?
- Yes, badges form the cornerstone of the USTA Coaching Certification pathway, offering a system that is both flexible and tailored to specific roles.
- To achieve USTA Coaching Professional certification (the initial certification level), you must earn a designated series of core and elective badges. These badges demonstrate your knowledge, practical experience, and coaching role.
- The USTA Coaching Specialist certification, which will also utilize this badge-based approach, is set to launch in 2026.
- The USTA Coaching Masters certification, representing the pinnacle of recognition and leadership, is scheduled for a 2027 launch.
- While you have the option to begin by earning individual badges to develop specific skills, obtaining full USTA Coaching Certification is achieved by completing the required badge pathway. This process can be completed at your own pace and is aligned with the skills most pertinent to your individual coaching journey.
How long does it take to earn a badge?
- Badge Completion Options: The flexible, modular design allows you to learn at your own pace while earning recognition for meaningful, hands-on learning.
- Online Modules: Fully online badges consist of no more than 7 modules, with each module being approximately 20 minutes. These badges typically require 2 to 2.5 hours to complete in one sitting.

- Yes, you’ll have the option to display your badges and certifications on your USTA coach profile, helping you stand out to parents, players, and employers. These will be displayed when the online education becomes available. Any coach eligible to receive certification equivalency will also have this reflected on their profile and their public coach profile.
How does the USTA evaluate coaches for both the professional badges and the full certification pathway?
- USTA Coaching’s educational formative assessment philosophy is centered on the individual coach, tailoring assessments to their specific role, experience, and environment. This multi-layered approach of assess and self-asses builds practical skills for the real world.
- Learning: Modules feature knowledge checks, video analysis, and reflection prompts to test understanding and observation.
- Innovative Tools: AI-powered role-play avatars provide a safe space for coaches to practice decision-making and communication skills.
- Practical Application: In-person workshops and advanced certifications require portfolio submissions, including video of on-court coaching, to demonstrate real-world competence.
